At the conclusion of episode 1, we were introduced to this fellow:
Going by Prometheus, this killer appears to be the "big bad" that Oliver will face off with. But who is behind the mask?
There are a few theories out there. Is it Malcolm under a new guise? Could Roy have returned? Or maybe Flashpoint resurrected a previously deceased character. Robert Queen? Shado? Yao Fei? Perhaps.
I'm inclined to agree with the most common theory out there, that the villain is actually this man:
Some time after Sara was killed, Laurel and Thea brought her body to Nanda Parbat. Malcolm was pretty adamant that the Pit bringing back the deceased hadn't been done for a really long time and even then "only in legend." What if he was lying?
In the Arrow episode Restoration (Season 4, Episode 3) as Malcolm is denying Laurel and Thea, he has a tell.
The exact wording he uses is "Even if Sara went into the Pit, even if it worked, who...what came out of the Pit would not be Sara."
Between the "who" and the "what" verbiage, Malcolm's eyes dart to the side. Now, he may have been looking at Nyssa, but what if he tried it before? What if he submerged Tommy's body after his death?
Perhaps Malcolm kept Tommy hidden, training him prior to coming back to Starling City to rescue Thea. Maybe Tommy has been part of the league all this time.
If Tommy had been resurrected and driven mad by the Pit's waters, he would have that same blood lust that Thea had. That urge to kill, along with the death of Laurel may have set the younger Merlyn on a road for revenge.
Remember, during the season 1 finale of Arrow (Episode 23 Sacrifice), Tommy dies saving Laurel. As he is dying, he asks Oliver if Laurel is safe. As he is trying to ask Oliver for forgiveness for being so angry, he mentions, "I am my father." Foreshadowing perhaps?
Researching the word at dictionary.com, I read that the word Prometheus in common culture is defined as "a symbol of lonely and valiant resistance to authority." Oliver is the mayor now in Star City. Something to think about.
